As a parent, I worry about the safety of my child every day and think we should watch out for other people’s kids, too. However, I sometimes have to ask on what factors some people base their concerns.

A man, who would only identify himself as “Joseph” took his three daughters with him to go shopping at the local Walmart in Woodbridge, VA. While there, a customer alerted store security that he/she felt this man might be kidnapping three girls. What was the basis of this suspicion? Joseph is white and his three daughters are biracial. Apparently, this white guy walking around with three darker-skinned girls raised some red flags.

So, after they got home, a police officer paid them a visit. The entire family was home, including Joseph’s wife, Keana, who is black. They were informed that WalMart security had informed the sheriff’s office of a potential abducation. The couple was made to produce proof of their parentage and the children were questioned about who mommy and daddy were. Obviously livid, Keana called the Walmart store later, seeking an explanation. She was told that security was alerted by a customer who said Joseph and the girls “didn’t fit”. Keana pressed, asking what the person meant by “didn’t fit” and the Walmart employee said, “Well, they just don’t match up.”

The couple says that they plan to boycott Walmart.

Until recently, Cedric Cuthbert was a pastor at St. James African Methodist Episcopal Church in Sanford, Florida. He was also a 7-year employee of Disney’s Port Orleans resort, where he worked security. I say “was” because he has since been fire from both jobs after being caught with child porn.

This past Tuesday, Pastor Cuthbert was formally arrested and is facing charges over an incident that occurred last month. While on his Disney job, monitoring software on his work computer captured images of him on YouTube trolling for what investigators say were pornographic images involving teenage girls. The monitoring software also showed that the pastor was also working on his Easter sermon during this time.

Cuthbert alleges that he was not actively searching for these videos but, instead, was just following links sent to him via YouTube. However, it appears that logs show him sending a message to one girl in a video, writing “You are so cute!… Keep making vids! Send me a private vid longer, I am a big fan of yours!”.

Cedric Cuthbert will be charged with possession of material including sexual conduct by a child and soliciting a child for unlawful sexual conduct using a computer.

According to her school, Kiera Wilmot has been an exemplary student and was never a disciplinary problem. However, she did run afoul of her school’s zero-tolerance policy when trying a experiment she was considering using in an upcoming science fair.

On the morning of April 22, 2013, Kiera tried an experiment based on an idea she’d gotten from a friend. She mixed the drain cleaner “The Works” in a water bottle, along with some pieces of aluminum foil. This resulted in a small explosion. Fortunately, no one was injured. Kiera Wilmot owned up to the incident immediately and told the schools officials that she had no intent to harm anyone or cause a disruption.

Nonetheless, she was given a 10-day suspension and expelled, forcing her to attend an alternate school. As bad as this situation got for Kiera, this was not the worst part. On this day, she was also arrested and charged with discharging weapons on school property, which is a felony that could have had the 16-year-old facing up to 5 years in jail.

So, for being intellectually curious, Kiera Wilmot was facing losing her shot at a bright future.

As with many stories in the age of the internet, it spread quickly, even prompting a petition on Change.org. It appears that the attention and scrutiny this case got allowed enough room for common sense to enter. As a result, we can happily say today that Kiera Wilmot will not be facing criminal charges.

While she may still have to do some community service, at least she can now move forward with her life. Perhaps, now, we will stop the “criminalize first, question later” approach to dealing with our kids.

TMZ is reporting that Grammy-winning rapper Lil Wayne may be on his deathbed. Lil Wayne, born Dwayne Carter Jr., was admitted to Cedars-Sinai Hospital in Los Angeles after suffering multiple seizures. This is not the first time that the 30-year-old rapper has suffered seizures. It is believed to be tied to his his abuse of a concoction known as “sizzurp”, “lean” or “purple drank”. This is a mixture prescription-strength cough syrup (containing codeine and promethazine), clear soft drink (such as Sprite) and, usually, a Jolly Rancher candy. According to TMZ, Lil Wayne might have gone on a binge with this on Wednesday, as doctors are said to have found high amounts of codeine in his system.

In an update on TMZ, Lil Wayne has been administered his last rites and his family has been informed to say their goodbyes. He is currently in a medically-induced coma and ,apparently, a decision will need to be made about whether or not to take him off life support.

He is said to be surrounded by family and a number of rap artists are coming in to pay their respects.

Update: Reports of Lil Wayne’s impending death seem to have been exaggerated. TMZ now says that he is still in critical condition but “is stabilizing”.

Update #2: It looks like TMZ took us all for a ride. There are friends and family coming forth to say that they have spoken with Lil Wayne and that he was not on his deathbed. Apologies to all for helping spread a bad rumor. But, seriously Wayne, stay off the lean.

It ticks me off to see college kids put on blackface, particularly because of the history behind it. However, for an older person, this is absolutely inexcusable.

Dov Hikind is a Democratic assemblyman in New York. Recently, he threw a party at his home to celebrate the Jewish holiday of Purim, at which it is customary to wear costumes. So, Hikind had the brilliant idea of going as a “basketball player”, complete with blackface and an afro wig. The picture hit Facebook and all hell broke loose.

Initially, Hikind tried to be dismissive of the whole incident, calling complaints that he had received, including many from fellow legislators, as “political correctness to the absurd”. However, after the heat got too high and the pressure to great, he finally apologized.

Still, it’s clear that Hikind doesn’t get it. Despite claiming he’s learned his lesson, he said: “Next year I was thinking I’d be an Indian. But you know, I’ve changed my mind about that. I don’t think that’s a good idea. Somebody will be offended.”

However, Hikind was not so dismissive when fashion designer John Galliano stepped out wearing a get-up that appeared to mock Hasidic Jews:

“Who is he mocking?” added Brooklyn Assemblyman Dov Hikind. “The way the socks look, the jacket, the peyos . . . My question is, who’s he laughing at?

“If it was just anyone else, I wouldn’t know what to say. But considering who this guy is, considering his background and what he’s said in the past, let him explain it to all of us: Are you mocking us?

In other words, “if it’s not offending my group the, it’s not offensive”. Hypocritical much, Mr. Hikind?

A Whole Foods store on New York’s Upper West Side quickly pulled an ad for chicken featuring the a likeness of President Obama. The ad read “One Day Sale. Friday, February 22nd. Whole Organic Chicken. $1.99/pound.” The ad also showed the President looking kind of wild-eyed and eating a piece of chicken. For its part, Whole Foods says it was not meant to offend.

However, given the the silly, yet negative, stereotyping of black people’s love for fried chicken (people the world over eat fried chicken), Whole Foods should have known better.

Still, this was by no means as bad a decision as U.C. Irvine’s choice to serve fried chicken and waffles in 2011 or a Denver school’s decision to serve fried chicken and collard greens in 2010. Both of these were used to celebrate Martin Luther King day.

Wow!

For 30 years, Pete Domenici served as the Republican Senator from New Mexico. During the 1990′s, he was rather vocal during the sex scandal involving then-President Bill Clinton and a 21-year-old White House intern by the name of Monica Lewinsky, saying the following:

All reasonable observers admit that the President lied under oath and undertook a substantial and purposeful effort to hide his behavior from others in order to obstruct justice in a legal proceeding. My good friends and Democratic colleagues, Senators Joe Lieberman, Daniel Patrick Moynihan, Bob Kerrey, Diane Feinstein, and Robert Byrd, among others, have bluntly acknowledged publically that the President lied, misled, obstructed, and attempted in many ways to thwart justice’s impartial course in a civil rights case. The sticking point has been: Does this misbehavior rise to the level of impeachable offenses?

I have concluded that President Clinton’s actions do, indeed, rise to the level of impeachable offenses that the Founding Fathers envisioned.

In other words, Bill Clinton needed to be punished for lying about getting some nookie on the side.

However, it appears that, while questioning the behavior of one person in regards to covering up sexual indiscretions, the Senator was keeping a big skeleton buried in the back of his own closet: a married Pete Domenici had fathered a son out of wedlock as a result of a one-night stand. The woman with whom he had the affair, was the daughter of another U.S. Senator with whom Domenici had served. They only went public about their son, now 30, because they were afraid they were going to be outed by the press. Domenici claims that he told his wife and family about the son several months ago.

Let’s be real, Domenici is not unlike a lot of men who’ve been caught out there. But, here’s what gets me, how can you even fix your mouth to condemn someone over something you, yourself, had been covering up for years?

I’d be interested in how many “personal responsibility” and “family values” speeches he gave over the years while not fessing up to his own family about his own dirt. Don’t worry…IOKIYAR*, right?

(* It’s OKay If You’re A Republican)

Yesterday, a judge refused to dismiss a perjury charge against Shellie Zimmerman, wife of accused murderer George Zimmerman. George Zimmerman is currently facing trial in the 2012 shooting death of 17-year-old Trayvon Martin.

At a bail hearing for her husband on April 20, 2012, when asked about the state of their finances, Shellie Zimmerman testified that she and her husband were destitute. Believing the testimony of the Zimmermans, the court let George Zimmerman out on a bail of $15,000. However, when it was later revealed that they had taken in tens of thousands in donations, authorities uncovered that, while claiming to be broke, the Zimmermans had actually had received as much as $130,000 in donations. Just prior to the hearing, $47,000 was transferred from George Zimmerman’s account to his sister’s account and, on April 16 or 17, Shellie Zimmerman moved $74,000 from George’s account to serveral accounts in her name. Authorities also used recorded conversations that the Zimmerman’s had while George was in jail to show that they were speaking in code when referencing how much money was actually coming in for them.

As a result of not disclosing this money, and the fact that he was in possession of a second passport, George Zimmerman’s bond was revoked and he was re-arrested on June 3, 1012. Nine days later, on June 12, Shellie Zimmerman was arrested and charged with perjury. She was released on $1,000 bail.

George Zimmerman’s murder trial is set to begin June 10 of this year.

Once again, Eddie Long, former pastor of Atlanta’s New Birth Missionary Baptist megachurch, is in the news for all the wrong reasons. Nearly two years ago, Long made the news when his church paid a report settlement of nearly $25 million to 5 men who had accused him of having sexual relationships with them.

Now, Long is facing another legal battle. This time, it’s from former parishioners who claim that Long steered them to invest with a man who ran a Ponzi scheme on them.

According to the suit, the man in question, Ephraim Taylor, was allowed to hold financial seminars at the church in October 2009, with the full endorsement of Eddie Long. The victims of this alleged scam say that, had long not endorsed Taylor, who Long referred to as a “friend” and a “brother”, they would have never invested with him. Long himself did not invest any of his own money with Taylor.

According to the victims, Taylor promised them a 20 percent return on real estate investments.

During discovery, call logs to the church show that the church had been warned about Taylor two weeks before the seminars started. Nonetheless, the seminars were held and these church members, in the end, lost a combined total of nearly $1 million in this alleged scheme.

To date, Ephraim Taylor has faced no criminal charges.

Personal note: there were many individuals who handed over tens of thousands (in one instance, a person handed over $122,000) to this man. However, no one bothered to check this person’s background or credentials? Furthermore, did any watch the news or pick up a newspaper? The housing bubble burst in 2008, real estate went into freefall and, even today, we are still digging out of this hole. You mean to tell me that anyone talking real estate investment at the time would have raised a red flag with at least one of these people?

Many people, myself included, expressed shock and outrage when we heard about a man’s violent and racist act in which he slapped a crying baby on a plane and to the mother to “shut that n**ger baby up”. The baby suffered a swollen eye and a cut. The man who slapped him, 60 year old Joe Rickey Hundley, of Idaho, was arrested, charged with assault and is facing up to a year in jail.

However, it looks like he won’t be relying on his work income to help pay his legal fees. That is because, as of Sunday, Hundley is out of a job. Hundley was the president and chief executive of AGC Aerospace and Defense, Composites Group. The company has not stated if Hundley resigned or was terminated. Instead, the company, in its statement about the incident, said that “(a)s of Sunday, the executive is no longer employed with the company.”

Hundley apparently has a history with misdemeanor assault, as a plead guilty to it in 2007, as well.

Here’s hope to a big lawsuit and jail time in a place where the inmates slap hard.
