This past Saturday, Johnny Wimbrey and his wife went out for drinks at Sambuco's, a restaurant in their hometown of Plano, Texas. According to Wimbrey, they took a seat at a non-reserved table. After ordering, they were approached by the general manager, who requested that they give up their seats. Wimbrey indicated that they were fine where they were. It was at this point, things escalated and Wimbrey pulled out his phone and began recording.
In the video, the manager is heard telling Wimbrey that his is kicking the couple out. When Wimbrey asks why, the manager says "Because I don't like you." The manager then threatens to call the police. Security for the restaurant shows up to inform the couple that, if they stay, they could be arrested. After a few minutes, the couple leaves. Wimbrey stated that, from their car, they saw a number of police officers show up at Sambuco's.
What management at the restaurant was not aware of was that Johnny Wimbrey is a somewhat well-known author and motivational speaker. Even if they were not aware of that, there is something that should matter to Sambuco's -- Wimbrey says that he has booked out the place three times before for events he hosted there through his company.
It appears that this incident happened because the manager wanted to give the table to a white customer who's a regular there.
A spokesperson for Sambuco's offered the following "apology" from the company:
"We apologize for the miscommunication with our guest on Saturday night, which resulted from a mix-up at our host stand. Sambuca has no tolerance for discrimination and always wants to make every guest feel welcome and respected."
In the wake of this incident, Wimbrey says his attorney is working on obtaining a copy of the 911 call.
